Glenn Maxwell hit a career-best 146 as record-breaking Hampshire thrashed Lancashire at Old Trafford.

The Australian hammered 22 fours and two sixes in a brutal 96-ball assault as Hampshire massed 360-9 – the county’s highest-ever 50-over total.

Then each member of Hampshire's five-man attack struck twice as Lancashire were bowled out for 212 inside 38 overs.

Hampshire’s 148-run win was the perfect response to the thrashing they received at Derby in their opening game of the Royal London One-Day Cup 24 hours earlier.

Lancashire also lost their opening game to rivals Yorkshire and after losing the toss again they conceded Old Trafford’s highest List A total. Hampshire's innings represents their highest-ever 50-over total and is also the biggest total Lancashire have ever conceded in the format.

The records did not end there Maxwell and Will Smith (49) shared 179 in 22.2 overs, a Hampshire record for the third wicket in one-day matches against Lancashire, beating the 129 shared between Robin Smith and David Gower at Southampton in 1991.

Enjoying a very flat pitch, Maxwell hit a quarter of his balls faced for fours or sixes following the departures of James Vince and Jimmy Adams.

He went from 50 to 100 in 30 balls to bring up a ton off 75 and when he was caught at short cover off Wayne White with the score at 236 for three in the 33rd, he had topped his previous career best by one run.

Sean Ervine also added 64 off 46 balls but he was one of five wickets to fall in the last six overs of the innings in the search for quick runs.

Lancashire were not helped by losing former Hampshire bowler Kabir Ali to a right shoulder injury after he had bowled only three overs.

Chris Wood dismissed openers Usman Khawaja and Ashwell Prince in the first seven overs and Maxwell took two catches at backward point off James Tomlinson, who was playing his first one-day game of the season, as Lancashire slipped to 71-4.

Liam Dawson bowled Paul Horton and Jordan Clark after they had added 64 in 11 overs and Danny Briggs and Matt Coles completed the rout.

Lancashire captain Glen Chapple said: "When you get a strong player in like Maxwell, it's very difficult to defend.

"Maxwell's one of those players. If he stays in for any length of time, he's scoring big runs. We knew that.

"Our plan was to bowl as well as we could at him in the knowledge he will give you a chance. It just didn't quite come. He was nearly caught at short cover early on and I don't think he was under a run a ball until he was 30. From 30 to 100, it was rapid. He punished us big time in the middle of the innings."

Hampshire play their third game of the competition against Gloucestershire at Bristol on Thursday.
