Jason Roy underlined his England one-day potential by hitting a spectacular 79 off 46 balls as Surrey romped to an eight-wicket victory against Kent in the NatWest T20 Blast South Division at the Kia Oval last night.
As a result, they jumped above Hampshire into second place in the table, with Essex still out in front.
Hampshire are still four points ahead of fourth-placed Sussex, though, with the top four all qualifying for the quarter finals.
Kent posted 155 for four thanks to half-centuries from Darren Stevens, who hit an unbeaten 56 off 38 balls, and Fabian Cowdrey, who anchored the Spitfires' innings with 55 in 45 deliveries.
But the outcome was never in doubt after Roy and Tillakaratne Dilshan, who made 46, had exploded out of the blocks in an opening stand of 118 in 12.2 overs.
As was the case in their last match, against Hampshire, Kevin Pietersen and Gary Wilson saw Surrey home, sealing victory with 13 balls to spare.
Hampshire are next in action in the T20 Blast against Kent at Canterbury tomorrow night, before hosting Somerset at The Ageas Bowl on Sunday.
