Jack Hillier won an emotional gold medal at the Haringey Box Cup.

The Southampton ABC fighter dedicated the win to his late club mate Lee Cutter, who died last week after falling from the Itchen Bridge.

Hillier was given help and support from Cutter since moving to the club and was devastated by his death.

However, he bounced back to seal a win in memory of his friend.

Hillier’s victory came in the open class youth category at 52-56kg at the Alexandra Palace after boxing twice in two days.

Hillier beat Ryan Conway (Kings Heath ABC) with a solid performance, putting his opponent on the back foot for the whole contest and hurting him several times with combinations to body and head to gain an unanimous decision.

In the final, Hillier defeated Jacob Croot (Downend ABC) in a real battle.

Croot wasn’t the best technically, but was brave and awkward and did not stop coming forward.

Hillier dropped his opponent with a vicious left uppercut in the second round, and knocked Croot out with a left hook overhand right combination in the third.

Southampton ABC head coach, Gary White, enthused: “We are made up for the lad because he has worked so hard for this.

“He has had another great season and added another title to go with the Junior ABA title he won last year.

“He is improving all the time and he has all the ingredients which make a champion.

“He can box, fight, hits hard with both hands and can take a punch.”
