CHANDLER’S Ford javelin ace Freya Jones has been named in the Team England athletics squad for next month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 20-year-old Southampton AC thrower is currently studying at the University of Georgia and has flourished under the guidance of coach Don Babbitt in the United States.

Improving her personal best to 54.95 in winning the National Collegiate title in Oregon last summer left her just five centimetres short of the Commonwealth qualifying mark.

Her wait was finally ended in April this year when the former Barton Peveril College student improved again to 55.36, sealing her ticket to Scotland.

Jones, who currently sits third in the UK rankings, will be joined north of the border by the two girls above her - Belgrave’s Goldie Sayers and North Devon’s Izzy Jeffs.

Nationally-ranked women’s marathon No1 Louise Damen from Winchester is also in the 129-strong Team England squad as are Aldershot’s Ben Moreau (marathon), Chris Thompson (10,000m), Andy Vernon (5,000m), Emilia Gorecha (5,000m) and Isobel Pooley (high jump).
