Whitenap shine in the sun

Two early goals set Whitenap on course for a comfortable home victory against a hard working Weeke side last Sunday morning in the Winchester & District Sunday League.
On a glorious spring day at Timsbury Rec, it was Weeke who started the brighter and the Whitenap defence had to be alert to thwart any danger. Therefore, it was slightly against the run of play when Whitenap took a fifth minute lead when a good move resulted in Adam Sherman firing home.
This gave the Romsey side a big lift and they soon doubled their advantage when Dan Hansford made a clever run to provide a low cross, which the visitors failed to clear and defender James Atterbury was on hand to punish.
Whitenap looked odds on to proceed to extend their lead further but they failed to turn their superioty into goals. Weeke held out with some desperate defending and gradually clawed their way back into the game, wasting a good chance just before the interval when a striker shot wide when clear through on goal.
The second half saw Whitenap remain dominant but again just could not find the back of the net. Chance after chance was squandered as Weeke bravely held out. Whitenap were awarded a penalty for handball, but Sherman's well struck effort was saved by the goalkeeper.
Weeke were a threat on the break and several times the Whitenap defence had to be at their best, as did the ever dependable Richard Blake in goal who made two crucial saves. Whitenap kept attacking up until the final whistle with Tom Croucher, Gregg Meehan and Sherman all going agonisingly close but in the end they had done enough to secure a good victory and 3 valuable points.
This Sunday morning Whitenap have a game off but the following week host F.I.L.O. in their final home game of the season.
