Hampshire cyclist Dani King this week aims to become a world champion for the fourth consecutive year.

The 23-year-old is in Cali, Colombia, with the Great Britain team for the Track Cycling World Championships.

King is part of the women’s team pursuit squad, who are favourites to continue their dominance of the event.

Much of the intrigue this week will likely be around whether they can beat their own world record time, rather than where they will finish on the podium.

Hamble star King has been part of the gold medal winning teams in 2011, 2012 and 2013 – while also becoming an Olympic champion during that period.

King is joined in the women’s endurance squad by her London 2012 teammates Joanna Rowsell and Laura Trott, with Elinor Barker and Katie Archibald making up the group.

Four of those five will be selected to ride in the pursuit this Thursday, when the qualifying heats and finals are due to take place.

Trott says the competition for places helps bring out the best in each of them.

“You continue to push each other along,” she said.

“If there was four of you and you just had a guaranteed spot in the team then you’d just think ‘I’m in it, it doesn’t matter’.

“You don’t push yourself to the limit, whereas, obviously, we’re fighting for spaces. Everybody wants to ride in that team.”
