Luke's snooker success story

EASTLEIGH potter Luke Beebe has completed an unprecedented clean sweep of all four end-of-year junior tournaments at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club.

But the 12-year-old was pushed all the way in an absorbing John Parrott Cup final by the intelligent matchplay of Totton teenager Lee Fitzpatrick, writes TIM DUNKLEY.

It ended a remarkable two days for Beebe, who compiled a personal best 47 break 24 hours earlier in the Eastleigh & District Under-13 League.

Fitzpatrick arrived at the event to find the previous day’s rain had penetrated his cue case and saturated his tip.

One new tip later and the 16-year-old cruised undefeated through the group stages. In the first frame of the final, Beebe led by 37 points with two reds left.

But Fitzpatrick, whose matchplay skills have been honed against battle-hardened league players at Totton Recreation Club, clawed back the deficit and won on the black.

He threatened the same again in the next from 25 points adrift but lost on the blue.

The tables were turned in the decider. Chasing the game, Beebe delighted spectators with a 34 clearance.

Tim Dunkley, the budding star’s World Snooker coach, said: “To win all four trophies is a marvellous achievement.

“Luke was under the cosh for most of the game as Lee nailed him to the baulk cushion but the clearance was top drawer.”

Beebe had previously collected the O’Sullivan Cup and Cavagnetto Cup for under-13s and the Tim Dunkley Cup for under-18s.

The John Parrott Cup was launched in 2001, five years after the 1991 world champion had appeared in exhibition at Chandler’s Ford SC.
