Southampton Ladies were in seventh heaven after thrashing Worthing 7-1 – their biggest South Women’s League victory in years.

After Worthing forced three short corners in the opening six minutes, play switched to the opposite end and Southampton put away their first set piece – Lauren Carter playing a one-two with Sue Merry and scoring from ten yards.

The floodgates opened once Ros Wellington netted twice in six second half minutes to give the city girls a 3-0 lead.

Worthing clawed a goal back but in the final ten minutes found themselves fighting a furious rearguard action.

Lauren Butcher scored twice to make it 5-1 and teenager Ellie Streather got the sixth – much to the delight of her father Dave, the Fawley cricket captain.

The sprightly Sue Merry made it seven to round off a perfect day for Southampton, who lie third in the Division 3B table.
