Spotlight is on rugby cups
A variety of cup matches dominate the rugby union scene tomorrow as league action takes a breather with a handful of games played.
London 2 South-West clubs Winchester, Tottonians and Trojans face stiff opposition from leading sides in 2SE as they battle in the RFU Intermediate Cup.
Winchester head to London to take on Charlton Park, who hold third spot in 2SE with four wins from five games.
Winch travel on the back of an away victory but are without influential fly half Greg Sullivan who is being rested. Pat Cheshire gets his chance in the first team in his place.
Other players may also be sidelined for various reasons so coach Andy Fields will make a late decision on his squad.
Impressed However, there is a place on the team bus for Chris Keegan, who has impressed from the bench in recent weeks.
Tottonians will also be making an early start for their trip to Kent to take on Sevenoaks – they sit fourth in 2SE with four wins from five.
Totts have been forced to make a few changes due to unavailability. Nick Jones switches to wing and Ben Dolbear moves to fullback.
Coach Gavin Williams said: “Elsewhere we have opted for continuity and favouring players in form. “It’s a relatively settled side and we travel to Kent confident we can put in a strong performance.
“We see the cup as an important part of the season and aim to be competitive in every game we play.”
Trojans are the third side in RFU Intermediate Cup action.
The Stoneham Lane club has kicked off the season with two defeats, two draws and a win and face an in-form Deal & Betteshanger side which has yet to taste defeat.
Trojans’ head coach Dean Lewis will be using the game to try out some new moves and to introduce some fringe players to first team rugby.
“We should have a few debutants for the game,” said Lewis.
“I want to play a few new players and try some new combinations.
“It’s a game we take seriously and some of the boys have been pushing for first team shirts and this gives us the vessel to play them.”
Several sides will fly the flag for Hampshire in the national Junior Vase.
There have already been a couple of withdrawals from county cup matches, with Team Solent handing their game to Eastleigh in the Gales HSB Hampshire Bowl and University of Southampton backing out of their tie with Portsmouth University.
Planned fixtures: RFU Intermediate Cup Charlton Park v Winchester, Portsmouth v Old Colfeians, Sevenoaks v Tottonians, Trojans v Deal & Betteshanger.
