Bailey to captain Australia in India
2:19pm Wednesday 9th October 2013 in Sport
Former Hampshire batsman George Bailey will captain Australia against India in eight limited-overs matches in the next three weeks.
The Aussies play a Twenty20 international in Rajkot tomorrow before the seven-match ODI series begins in Pune on Sunday.
Also in the squad are former Hampshire stars Shane Watson and Glenn Maxwell, who helped Mumbai Indians beat Watson’s Rajasthan Royals with a 14-ball 37 in last Sunday’s Champions League T20 final.
But Michael Clarke has been ruled out through injury so Bailey captains under stand-in coach Steve Rixon, with Darren Lehmann also rested ahead of next month’s Ashes opener.
Rixon said: "George (Bailey) is relatively new to captaincy. He has done it with distinction in T20 and now gets an opportunity to do it in the one-day competition.”
Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Faulkner and Mitchell Johnson were also involved in the recent Champions League T20 final.
"We have been fortunate to have five of them playing," said Bailey. "We are in a reasonable position.”
