Mottisfont clinch title
11:16am Friday 30th August 2013 in Sport
Mottisfont wrapped up the Hampshire League Regional 1 West title with a massive 184-run victory against visiting Godshill.
Godshill skipper Alan Cousins won the toss on a dull cloudy day at Bengers Lane, put the Font into bat – and soon had the home side in trouble with both Dan Husbands and Richard Blake back in the pavilion with only eight runs on the board.
But the Font proved they are not top of the league for nothing when Ian Bradwell and R J Davey (81) put on a magnificent stand of 161.
Abrasive and hard hitting Neil Barnes contributed 61 and that was followed by a swashbuckling 22 from Nick Johnson before he was run out off the last ball of the innings.
While all this was going on, in-form Ian Bradwell helped himself to his second century (114no) of the season as the Font amassed their highest ever score in the Hampshire League – 312-5.
When Godshill batted they lost skipper Cousins lbw to Neil Barnes but then Clive Bealey (32) joined Jason Cooper, who had scored a magnificent 187 in his previous game.
The Font did not want this to happen again, and he was dismissed for 27 after they put on 49 for the second wicket.
Godshill then lost four wickets for 29 runs – all taken by Richard Blake (4-28).
Neil Fotheringham (31) and Borland (10) took the visitors to 118 all out as Ian Jerram (3-46) took the last three wickets giving the Font a massive 194 run victory and promotion.
It was Mottisfont’s 13th win in 14 matches and ensured they finished well clear of runners-up Whiteparish.
