Scannell leaves the Spitfires
11:38pm Monday 19th August 2013 in Sport
WINGER Damian Scannell has left Eastleigh by mutual consent.
The Croydon-based 28-year-old made a total of 102 appearances over two spells with the Spitfires, scoring 19 goals.
He is believed to be attracting interest from Eastleigh's Skrill Conference South rivals Bromley and Sutton United.
Spitfires boss Richard Hill explained: "Damian was unhappy at being on the bench for the opening game against Sutton on Saturday.
"I am pleased that he was. This is a highly talented squad I have here but, on the other hand, I cannot guarantee Damian a starting place every week, and that goes for any member of the squad and they all have to take that into consideration.
"The players here are realistic and know that the season runs for forty weeks and all players need to be kept on their toes to keep their starting place.
"Damian wants a regular starting place and I am sure there will be a number of clubs that he can walk into now that we have agreed to his release."
Scannell originally signed for Eastleigh in July 2007 from Fisher Athletic on a free transfer.
His fleet-footed skills earned him a Football League break with Southend United in January 2008 and, following a spell with Dagenham & Redbridge, he returned to the Silverlake Stadium in December 2011 shortly after Bridle Insurance had begun their sponsorship of the club.
