Happy birthday – March 6
Former Saints defender Garry Monk celebrates his 34th birthday today in what has already been a remarkable year for the defender.
Monk never really cemented his place in the side at Saints, making just 11 league appearances in eight years, but has enjoyed a memorable career at Swansea, whom he joined in 2004 when the Welsh club were in the fourth tier.
He has played for the Swans in each of the top four divisions, and came on as a sub when the club won the Capital One Cup at Wembley last month.
Other sporting celebrities with a birthday today are:
Dick Fosbury (athletics) - American who revolutionised high-jumping by leaping backwards over the bar to win 1968 Olympic gold medal, launching the term 'the Fosbury flop', born 1947.
Toni Schumacher (soccer) - Former West Germany goalkeeper, who dramatically collided with France's Patrick Battiston in the 1982 World Cup semi-final, born 1954.
Alison Nicholas (golf) - English winner of 1997 US Women's Open and Solheim Cup captain in 2009 and 2011, born 1962.
Shaquille O'Neal (basketball) - One of the most dominant players in NBA history, winning four championship titles with Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat, born 1972.
Giorgos Karagounis (soccer) - Fulham and Greece midfielder, born 1977.
Tim Howard (soccer) - Everton and United States goalkeeper, formerly with Manchester United, born 1979.
Charlie Mulgrew (soccer) - Celtic and Scotland defender, born 1986.
