WINCHESTER housing bosses are looking to build some 60 council houses on a city estate, the first new council houses in the city for 25 years.

The city council is investigating developing several sites across Abbotts Barton, the former council estate on the northern edge of the city centre.

Sites include a grassy area off Dyson Drive, potentially large enough for around 20 homes, land off Chaundler Road and three garage blocks.

The city council wants to build 100 new homes over the next three years and 300 over ten years.

Ian Tait, portfolio holder for new homes delivery on the Conservative-controlled council, said: “I have asked officers to look at Dyson Drive. It looks an ideal site and gives us an opportunity to start rolling out affordable housing in the area in meaningful numbers.”
