WINCHESTER is strengthening its reputation as a high-class restaurant city with news that celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is set to open a base in the High Street.

The Jamie Oliver Group has taken a 25-year lease on the building, formerly Pizza Hut, and will open a Union Jacks restaurant in mid-summer. It will create around 35 jobs.

The branch will be the first Union Jacks outside London.

I welcome another restaurant but not sure “high class restaurant city” is the right description. Try and book a table at the 6 or so “high class” places and when you eventually get one the food is not high class. It’s above average. The prices are high class. I would like to think Winchester has a good cross section of eateries but many are over-rated and rely on the fact that it’s a “sellers market”.

I'm no fan of celebrity chefs, but to be fair to Jamie Oliver I have eaten in his restaurant in Glasgow a couple of times and it was decent enough food at a reasonable price.
