Winchester civic chiefs are set to appoint a permanent tree survey officer to look after the 7,530 trees on council land.
More than 2,000 are growing on potentially high-risk locations and some 1,300 need checking in the next 12 months to ensure safety, the town forum heard.
Among the places where the council owns a large number are Oram’s Arbour, River Park, Romsey Road and Airlie Road, the forum was told.
The 7,530 figure is across the whole district. In the city area the figure is 3,550.
Councillor Chris Pines said: “We have got to take this seriously. Trees are so important to the feel of Winchester. You cannot imagine this town without trees."
