MORE patients than ever before are able to stay in same-sex wards in hospitals across Hampshire.
Department of Health data shows that no patients stayed in mixed-sex accommodation last December in all Hampshire hospitals without clinical justification, down from just 600 patients in December 2010.
Across England a record 73 per cent of hospitals are reporting no cases of shared accommodation, an increase from 52 per cent the previous year.
Sarah Elliott, director of nursing for the Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth PCT Cluster, said: “It is great news that our hospitals are able to ensure that most patients get to stay in single-sex accommodation unless they need to be treated in mixed-sex wards for clinical reasons.”
