A WINCHESTER school is officially one of the best in the country in English.
Westgate School’s English department came in the top five per cent of schools nationally for the 2011 GCSE class.
The results are based on national data which shows how much progress pupils make during their time at school.
Head of English Catherine Baker said she was proud 89 per cent of pupils achieved A* - C in English Literature and 85 per cent did in English Language. She said: “In a year when the School is celebrating its centenary from when it was founded as The County School for Girls, 96 per cent of girls achieved A* - C in Literature. “54 per cent of pupils achieved A/A* in English Language and this is a very gratifying. We all work hard and are proud of our pupils’ success.” Headteacher Paul Nicholson said: “It is a matter of ensuring that all pupils realise that they can achieve their potential and teachers put a lot of effort into giving support where it is needed. “This meant that 70% of pupils made four levels of progress in English during their time at the school, which is an exceptional result and well above the national average.”
The school received the more detailed results in December, a few months after the more broad A*-C figures revealed in August.
