Winchester residents win campaign for road crossing

ROAD safety campaigners in Winchester have succeeded in tackling one of the city's busiest roads.

Residents of St Cross have been calling for Hampshire County Council to provide a pedestrian crossing along the junction of St Cross Road and Stanmore Lane to protect children and families walking to school.

The route is heavily used for commuter and school traffic, providing direct access into the centre of Winchester from the M3.

But the council has now announced it will install crossings to the north and south of the junction with designs being finalised by officers.

The news came after council leader Cllr Ken Thornber held talks last Friday with St Cross resident Matt Nisbet, Winchester MP Steve Brine and Cllr Brian Collin, who represents St Cross on the county council.
