Winchester City Council set to return to building homes Winchester City Council set to return to building homes

WINCHESTER City Council chiefs are to consider a target of building a minimum 30 new council homes in the next five years.

The portfolio holder for strategic housing and landlord services, councillor Tony Coates, said at a meeting of the full council that new funding arrangements under the government’s self financing proposals for the Housing Revenue Account will provide the opportunity for building new council homes on a small scale.

The proposal will consider the proposal to be set out through the Housing Revenue Account Business Plan to the cabinet housing committee in February.

It was also reported that at least three new council homes would be built and let within the next six months.

They build them and then they sell them with a large discount. 3 will be built within 6 months and then sold within 5 years. Some are then sublet at a much greater rent than the original council rent.

Yes, well said Winches, it's pathetic isn't it. When are they going to admit that selling council houses was a dreadful mistake? It's patently obvious now: lack of housing stock, homeless families, irresponsible millionaire landlords, student trouble and broken communities.

Stop the sale of council houses and start building homes for those that need them at fair rents.
