5:00pm Monday 23rd January 2012 in Winchester
A SECTION of a Hampshire road could remain closed until Friday (January 27) due to a burst water main.
The 100m stretch of Bereweeke Road in Winchester, from the Stockbridge Road end, has been closed to traffic since the early hours of this morning (January 23) - repair crews arrived on the scene at 4am.
Police said they were alerted to a significant amount of water pouring into the road on Sunday night and called in the Highways team and utility company Southern Water.
No customers lost their water supply as a result, according to Southern Water.
A spokeswoman said they were informed of the problem at 3.15am and were trying to fix the pipe, but that it is a complicated repair.
The pipe is 12 inches in diameter and the damaged section is 12 metres long, which will need to be replaced due to its size.
Southern Water hoped to have fixed the pipe itself this evening, but indicated last night that the water has damaged the road surface so it would need large scale resurfacing, taking until at least Friday.
The spokeswoman apologised for the inconvenience and said they were doing all they could to fix the problem.
