THE Rev Canon Timothy Dakin is to take the first step to becoming Bishop of Winchester.
Firstly he has to be made a bishop in a service led by the Archbishop of Canterbury at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on Wednesday, January 25.
Canon Dakin, who has spent 12 years as general secretary of the Church Mission Society(CMS), will then be enthroned in Winchester Cathedral on April 21. He will be the 97th Bishop of Winchester and follows in the footsteps of the 94th bishop, John Taylor (1974-84), who was also previously general secretary of CMS.
Canon Dakin is moving to Winchester from Berkshire with wife Sally – a midwife and associate priest – and children Anna, 21, and Johnny, 16.
Andrew Robinson, chief executive of the Diocese of Winchester, said: “I very much look forward to working with Tim. His skills demonstrated through his time at CMS mean he is ideally suited to leading the diocese.”
The Suffragan Bishop of Basingstoke, The Rt Rev Peter Hancock, who has led the diocese during the vacancy, said: “Tim’s contribution as a theologian, especially in the area of mission, has been widely recognised and I am sure he will help us to engage more effectively with the communities, parishes and people that we seek to serve.”
