POLICE are examining CCTV footage to try to catch the culprit suspected of causing damage to a Winchester historic monument.

One of the pinnacles of the Buttercross monument, on Winchester High Street, broke off and hit the ground, smashing on impact leaving fragments in the street.

The council has said that it does not think the piece fell off of its own accord.

Police confirmed that the incident had been reported to them and they were continuing to investigate.

It is not known how the Buttercross was damaged, but the incident happened between Boxing Day and the morning of December 27, and police collecting the pieces which were later returned to the city council.

The landmark, which is often used as a meeting point, dates back to the 15th century, but was restored in 1865.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
