CHILDREN from several schools around Winchester have been paving the way for road safety this week at a special training day at the Rose Bowl.

The Junior Road Safety Officer programme brought 187 children from Hampshire schools to the stadium on Tuesday, October 12 to train as officers for their schools.

The children selected for this years programme were Emily Gray from Upham Primary, Gus Jones from Curdridge Primary, Jade Burdon and Janaya Brasted from Droxford Junior, Katie Grayson and Daisy Hill from Durley Primary, Esra Crockford and Tom Kempster from Sunhill Junior and Jasmine Fuller and Oliver Markham-Bradley from Twyford St Mary’s Primary School.

The children, all from year 5 or 6, volunteered for the job which sees them promote road safety to their classmates through assemblies, competitions and notices.

Councillor Mel Kendal, Executive Member for Environment at Hampshire County Council, said: “It is very encouraging to see that so many of the schools in Hampshire have signed up to this valuable road safety education programme.”

JRSO’s at Upham Primary have already make a difference, after assemblies increased the number of children and families wearing high-visibility clothing by 50%.
