THE inquest into the death of Staff Sergeant Olaf Schmid from Winchester has been opened.
The 30-year-old was killed while defusing a bomb in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on Saturday, October 31.
His body was flown home on Thursday, November 5, arriving at RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire.
As a result, it came under the jurisdiction of the Wiltshire and Swindon Coroner’s Court.
Sitting in Salisbury today (Wednesday, November 11) and coinciding with Armistice Day, the inquest was opened by HM Coroner for Wiltshire and Swindon, David Ridley.
He then adjourned the case so that more details could be gathered.
A spokeswoman at the Salisbury court said the matter was now likely to be transferred to Central Hampshire Coroner’s Court in Winchester. However, the official handover is yet to be confirmed.
