RECYCLING rates in Hampshire remains stuck on a little more than a third, far below the target.

At 38 per cent, the figure since 2008/09 it lags behind the national figure of 44 per cent, a meeting heard.

Nationally the Government has a target of 50 per cent by 2020.

A joint committee of Winchester and East Hampshire councillors heard from Chris Noble, head of Project Integra said the reason was the relatively limited range of items that can be handled by the materials recovery facility.

The European Union is aiming for a 65 per cent rate by 2030.

The EU is working to standardise the range of materials used in packaging but it is not clear if it will be agreed before Brexit.
