WOMEN’S influence on the history of Winchester is the subject of a series of guided walks.
Women wielded power in Winchester in many ways - from directly political to more subtle ways: one of the tours, on June 3, features the mistresses of King Charles II who were lodged variously around the city in the 1600s.
On June 10 Winchester’s place as the last residence of Jane Austen will be the subject. Jane spent her last weeks in Winchester, where she wrote her final poem entitled ‘Venta’.
The Victorian age brought further indomitable characters as Mary Sumner, who founded Mothers’ Union in 1876, now a worldwide organisation, and Josephine Butler, who fought tirelessly against human trafficking in the 1800s (June 17).
