THE first major photocall of the General Election campaign in Winchester was blessed with fine weather.

More than 100 Liberal Democrat supporters turned up at Oram’s Arbour on a sunny Saturday to show their support for their candidate Jackie Porter.

The county and city councillor for the Itchen Valley is reprising the 2015 General Election when she stood against the sitting MP Steve Brine.

His majority increased from a near-marginal 3,048 votes in 2010 to a resounding 16,914 in 2015.

On a relatively high turn-out of 74.6 per cent Mr Brine took 55 per cent of the vote.

The General Election received a lukewarm reception nationwide but some divisions in the recent county council elections attracted voters turnouts of over 50 per cent.

There is added uncertainty because of Brexit. Winchester was one of the staunchest pro-European Union constituencies in the country at the referendum in June 2016. Will that translate into more votes for the pro-EU Lib Dems?
