The makers of a new Winchester Monopoly board game have announced that three local charities will appear on the game.

Winning Moves UK, who are designing the new version, have already asked the public for suggestion on what Winchester street, landmarks and locations would appear on the board and now it is doing the same with local charities. The three lucky charities will feature as community chest cards in the Winchester version of Monopoly.

The Mayor of Winchester Cllr Jane Rutter said: “I am delighted, but not surprised, that there has been a great response from local people offering suggestions for the spaces to fill the Winchester Monopoly game. It has really captured local imagination, and I am particularly pleased that there have been lots of suggestions which highlight the range and number of wonderful local charities in the Winchester District. “

Cllr Rutter added: “Appearing in the new Monopoly game on their very own spaces will be a great boost to three local charities, and I will be suggesting the ones which I have been supporting this year through the Mayor’s Charity fundraising: Street Reach, Winchester Youth Counselling and Home-Start.”

Benjamin Thompson, custom games executive at Winning Moves UK said: "Three Winchester based charities will now appear on their very own exclusive spaces in the game. The response to our initial invitation last month for nominations for one charity to feature on the board has been phenomenal. We have been very pleasantly overwhelmed with suggestions, so we are now offering three charities the opportunity.”

The announcement that Winchester is getting an official game this year was first made last month. The game is being launched to mark the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death and as well as being all things Winchester, it will have many references to Britain’s greatest authoress, who died in the city in 1817, including her portrait on the Monopoly money.

A number of prominent retailers have confirmed that they will be stocking the new Winchester edition including WH Smiths, Waterstones, Argos and online retailer Amazon.

Suggestions of Winchester charities to appear on the game should be made to: winchester@winningmoves.co.uk or by post to: Monopoly: Winchester Edition, Winning Moves UK, 7 Praed Street, London W2 1NJ.
