COUNCILLORS have approved the removal of parking bays and new kerb build-outs to combat speeding on a busy Winchester street.

Councillors approved the construction on Hyde Street as a traffic-calming measure.

The road had additional parking bays installed in 2015 to help control the speed of traffic.

However, following complaints about reduced visibility caused by parked vehicles, it was proposed to remove them in October last year.

Residents have since pressed for the introduction of replacement traffic calming measures as a condition of the bays being removed.

Cllr Rose Burns, who described the road as "dangerous", expressed concern that the build-outs could force traffic onto the other side of the road, but council officer Neville Crisp said they would allow enough opportunity get back onto the right side of the road.

Cllr Fiona Mather said the build-ups could have the opposite effect in speeding up traffic, and described them as "an ad-hoc solution."

"There is a better-looking way of dealing with this problem," she said.

Hyde Street is one of the few main roads into the city with a large number of parked cars; Alresford Road is another.
