The annual Christmas event that is loved by families and children across Winchester returns today.

The procession will take place in the Outer Close from 6pm to 8pm, and there will also be community carols organised in association with Churches Together in Winchester.

Meanwhile, Bella Crafts has given children the chance to make lanterns with a workshop at their Romsey and Fair Oak sites, allowing children to get creative in the days before the event.

The procession, which involves colourful handmade paper and willow lanterns, will leave the Cathedral at 6pm and parade around the Outer Close. The celebrations include live music, congregational carols and conclude with fireworks.

A spokesman for Winchester Cathedral said: “We’re all looking forward to something which has grown considerably in popularity over the years and become a regular event in many families’ calendars.

"Over 150 lanterns of all shapes and sizes paraded last year - sporting some remarkably inventive designs - and having carols from Winchester Churches helps to give the event and everyone who takes part a bit of that true community Christmas spirit.”
