A ZOO is asking for help to name a beautiful new leopard cub.

The critically-endangered Amur leopard twins were born at Marwell to mum Kaia and it has been discovered that both are male.

Zookeepers have chosen to name one of the youngsters Anik, after a mountain, which is the animals’ natural habitat in central Asia.

But they want to give the public the chance to choose what to name the second cub.

The choices are Zakhar, which means ‘God remembers’ in Russian, Sabor, which is the leopard from Tarzan, and Kazimir, Russian for ‘destroyer of peace’.

Voters also have a chance to win a family ticket to Marwell Zoo. Make your choice at www.marwell.org.uk/leopardcub.

Marc Fox, Team Leader for carnivores at Marwell, near Colden Common, said: “Kaia is an experienced mother and is looking after her cubs very well - she’s calm, confident and very patient with her lively youngsters.

“It’s great to watch the cubs finding their feet, jumping and climbing and exploring their new surroundings.

“The team have picked a shortlist of three favourite names so we hope that a public vote will help us decide.”

Zoos like Marwell with successful breeding programmes are becoming increasingly important as the cats are endangered in the wild.
