POLICE are warning motorists to expect delays later this week as Boomtown Fair begins.

Tens of thousands will descend on Matterley Estate near Winchester this weekend for the fifth festival.

Hampshire Constabulary says it is working with the organisers and local authority partners to minimise the impact on the local community.

Silver police commander for Boomtown Fair, Superintendent Kelly Whiting, said: “Boomtown is a popular event and has increased the number of people that it attracts to Hampshire over recent years. Together with our partners and festival organisers, we are committed to running a safe and secure event that everyone can enjoy.

“We have a mobile police office on site which will be a central point of contact for festival-goers over the weekend."

She added: “We've worked together with Winchester City Council, Hampshire Highways and Boomtown's traffic management organisers to try and reduce traffic congestion on the roads surrounding the site.

"However, with any event where a lot of people are expected to attend, there will be heavy traffic especially on the Thursday as people arrive, and Monday as people leave. Please keep following all agencies social media feeds for the latest updates."

They are urging festivalgoers who want advice and guidance to keep them safe at the festival to follow @FestivalCop on Twitter.
