KING Alfred Boys’ Club was Winchester’s youth club.

The original club opened in Beggars Lane and in 1964, thanks to the foresight of local businessmen and benefactors, it moved into purpose-built premises in Middle Brook Street where it remained until 2001.

Originally for boys only but despite the name girls were welcomed in from the late 1960s.

The club developed a strong sporting tradition and a wide range of activities both locally and abroad and many people will remember the very popular discos.

Operating seven days a week throughout the year the wide ranging programme introduced the members to new experiences and established friendships that have lasted over the years.

This Saturday, June 18 starting at 4pm and running through the evening there will be a ‘Pop up KABC’ at the current King Alfred Youth Activities Centre in Winnall Valley Road, when over 100 former members will be gathering for a reunion to renew friendships and remember their time at the club.

Tickets costing £5 are still available and can be booked by contacting kingalfredbc@gmail.com.

Trevor Jones, who was the club leader during the late 1970s and early 1980s and has been one of the group organising the reunion says that over the years the club has had a positive impact on the lives of many young people.

He said he was looking forward to having the opportunity to meet up again to remember the good times at the club share what’s been happening us over the years since.
