A MAN found unconscious on a Winchester street last night has been arrested on suspicion of attacking a police officer and harassing paramedics, the force has said.

The 35-year-old refused treatment from South Central Ambulance Service after being found near King Alfred’s statue in Winchester.

Police said he suffered a “non-life threatening medical episode”, ruling out claims by the ambulance service that he had been attacked.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "We were called shortly after 6:50pm on Wednesday, May 11, by South Central Ambulance Service to an incident where a man was found in need of assistance on the Broadway in Winchester.

"There were initial concerns that this man had been assaulted, however enquiries have now ruled this out The man was suffering from a non-life threatening medical episode.

"Paramedics tried to assist the man, but he refused treatment and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and causing harassment to the paramedics. No-one was seriously hurt. The 35 year-old man from Winchester has been bailed until June 20 pending further enquiries".

A South Central Ambulance Service spokesman told the Chronicle that the man had been attacked after a row with two other people and had been taken away by police.
