Firefighters from Winchester helped deal with a 'hazardous material incident' at the scene of an assault in Hampshire.

A 47-year-old man is in hospital following the attack which happened in Lee-on-the-Solent.

Police were called to the scene of the assault in the early hours this morning.

Hours later firefighters also arrived in the High Street where the incident happened.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said: "One fire engine and a specialist vehicle, both from Winchester Fire Station were called at 9.52am."

A police spokesperson would not release further details on the nature of the assault, and said they are trying to establish the circumstances of what happened. 

A spokesman said: “Officers were called just before 04:15am this morning (Tuesday, May 3) to a report that a 47 year-old man had been assaulted on the High Street in Lee On The Solent.

“He has been taken to hospital for treatment and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of what has happened.”
