WINCHESTER civic chiefs are to review their policy on memorial trees and street furniture.

The town forum heard that it receives about 12 requests a year for such tributes to the dead.

The charge for a memorial bench is £1,200 and between £150-200 for a tree.

Susan Croker, head of landscape and open spaces, told the town forum said the council has turned down some requests for trees because of concerns that areas such as The weirs may become “cluttered.”

One idea from Cllr Janet Berry is that the council could introduce memorial shrubs and even memorial bulbs.

Cllr Martin Tod said benches were good as they encouraged the elderly to be more active in walking, knowing that there would be places to rest on their way.

Cllr Ian Tait suggested memorial grit bins to which Cllr Tod responded: “I’m willing to have my ashes in a grit bin.”
