HUNDREDS of runners were welcomed by a Southampton football legend as they took on one of Hampshire's most varied long distance runs.

Former Saints manager Lawrie McMenemy kicked off the Hursley 10k on Sunday and was joined by Nick Holmes, who played under him in the 1976 FA Cup final.

All 473 runners finished the multi-terrain course at the Home Farm Estate, starting and finishing at John Keble School in good health. First aiders at WANT Medical Service treated one blister and three headaches.

Nearly 150 youngsters took part in a fun run that afternoon as part of the event, organised by Hursley Village Community Association, which raised thousands of pounds for local causes including John Keble School, All Saints Church and Shepherd's Down School in Shawford.

Ant Gritton won the main race with a time of 33 minutes and 44 seconds, winning his crown back from Matt King. Sue Sleath was the first woman to finish, notching a time of 42:04. They each won a £30 voucher for their efforts.

Matt King, Lydia Browing, Andrew Lewis and Leanne Watters completed the top three for each sex, with Alan Graham and Caroline Carr the fastest Hursley villagers.

Organisers are now preparing for next year's race on its 10th anniversary.
