A WINCHESTER antique clock dealer is celebrating after winning top prize at a London fair.

Carter Marsh and Co is selling a collection of more than 100 clocks, watches and scientific instruments worth around £15 million.

The Tom Scott Collection was exhibited at Masterpiece Fair at The Royal Hospital and the dealers said it received huge interest.

It also scooped top prize for object of the year for The Hanover Tompion, circa 1704-08 - a turtleshell and gilt brass mounted Grande Sonnerie bracket clock.

It was one of two ordered by George of Denmark, Queen Anne’s husband, later given by George I to his mistress Ehrengard von der Schulenburg.

The award committee said it won due to duality of materials as well as its provenance.

Jonathan Carter, managing director, said: "Masterpiece has been a great success. We were delighted to be able to offer such an extraordinary collection at the fair, but have been overwhelmed by how well it has been received and by the quality of collectors in attendance."

The fair saw a record 40,000 visitors, including Liz Hurley, Sir Michael Caine, Joanna Lumley, Princess Alexandra and Princess Michael of Kent.

Tom Scott, of Jersey and Guernsey, spent 30 years collecting the pieces, several of which previously belonged to royalty or noblemen.

Carter Marsh and Co is selling it on behalf of his family. The first half was exhibited and for sale throughout July and the second will be in November.
