A TIRELESS Winchester cyclist is back in the saddle after an accident which could have threatened her annual charity trek.

Jane Hough, of Ruffield Close, Harestock, has set off on a 10,000km cycle across Europe months after breaking her elbow.

Her 21st solo journey, crossing Germany to raise money for Christian Aid, started on Wednesday.

But it may not have happened at all after a biking accident days after her 2014 trip to Corsica.

Ms Hough said: “I was obviously distracted and did not notice a large overhanging weed across the roadway. It got tangled in my wheel and I fell over the handlebars and broke my elbow and got knocked out despite wearing a helmet.

“My elbow is now fastened together with a large metal plate thanks to the excellent surgeon at Winchester Hospital and I have been gradually getting back to cycling fitness.”

She added: “We are all especially aware of the need for aid when we hear of disasters like that in Nepal recently. Sadly, in some parts of the world, disaster is a daily occurrence and Christian Aid is always there to offer help”

This year’s trek – spanning 10,000km in 11 days – will depart from Basle and cross Germany before ending in the Czech Republic.
