IT has been three years since some 300 residents lined their Winchester street for the Diamond Jubilee, but last weekend saw them unite again to commemorate VE Day.

On Saturday Edgar Road was shut off from Lansdowne Avenue to Ranelagh Road for residents to meet each other, take photos and play games – some even wore 1940s themed costume.

A cake sale raised £150 for the Royal British Legion, and the rain held off.

It was organised by Kathy Heathcote, Vanessa Cooper-Ewing, Katherine Phillips and Simon Gillet.

Ms Heathcote said it was a great opportunity for neighbours to meet each other.

“We so seldom meet each other, not because we don’t like each other, but because life today is so busy, and VE Day seemed a wonderful opportunity to have a party,” she said.

“I think everybody got to meet their neighbours because everyone was going around talking to each other. It went fantastically and the weather has been wonderful.”
