A 21-YEAR-OLD pub quiz team has defeated opponents to take home the knock-out cup as part of a Winchester league.

The King Alfred pub team won the Pub Watch Gallon League in the last match of the season beating off the Crown and Anchor ‘A’ team by two points and the Eclipse Inn by six points.

‘A’ team took home the Winchester BID league prize by a two-point margin over King Alfred in a previous final.

Captain, Michael Morris, said his team began after he took part in Radio 4’s quiz, It’s Your Round, with question master, Peter White, now a regular Radio 4 presenter.

Eggheads quizzer, Kevin Ashman, who went on to win Mastermind, Brain of Britain, and win the World Quiz Champion several times, was in the audience and after chatting to Michael, became part of the King Alfred team.

They were later joined by Hyde locals, Steve Marper and Jim Reidy, to form one of the best-performing teams in Winchester.

Sponsored by Winchester Business Improvement District, and organised by Pete Byford, the quiz has been a mid-week highlight during the winter months since 1994 for lots of local pub-goers.
