A GRANDFATHER of 15 who is blind, wheelchair bound and battling cancer is preparing for a full marathon and hopes to raise more than £10,000.

Martin Jacobs, 70, has faced a string of illnesses over the past decade but is determined to 'do his bit' for charity by taking part in various physical challenges.

He has already completed the Great South Run but in April will do the Greater Manchester Marathon with the help of two guides.

“I'm expecting it to take seven to eight hours,” he said.

“My sense of humour is still working!”

The Winchester resident wants to raise money for Clic Sergeant, Trinity Winchester and the Alzheimer's Society and is hoping the power of the Internet can help him smash his target.

He is also due to become a grandfather for the sixteenth time in August and said he wants to create an example for his growing family.

“It's never been done before and it will be a unique achievement and part of my 'bucket list',” he said.

“I want to leave a legacy and make them proud.”

Mr Jacobs said he already has support from local pub owners but wants to get as many businesses behind him as possible.

He is organising a sixties night, raffle and other events to boost fundraising.
