A GARDENER who has maintained Winchester parks for decades has won a new award recognising the city’s unsung heroes.

Andy Thompson was named the first Valued Wintonian by hundreds of residents for looking after beauty spots in the Weirs and Abbey Gardens.

The 52-year-old, who lives in Romsey, has maintained the city gardens for 31 years, starting work at 7am to pick litter, cut grass and look after flowers.

More than 500 members of Winchester Pics, a Facebook group for local people to share photos and paintings of the city, nominated Mr Thompson in a public vote.

He said: “I was really chuffed. I get lots of nice comments from people coming up to me.

“I love doing this sort of job, being outdoors and meeting all kinds of different people. It’s lovely and relaxing.”

Derek Harper, who organised the award, said: [Andy’s] work, skill and commitment ensures that the Abbey Gardens, the gateway to our city and the Weirs remain attractive and welcoming to Wintonians and visitors alike.”

The group plans to repeat the award every year to recognise people who contribute to the city, he added.
