A WINCHESTER restaurant has made it onto a top 100 list after being open for only three months.

River Cottage Canteen, which opened in September, was named in the Open Table top 100 list, compiled from more than 340,000 diner reviews over a period of a year.

TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall said: “I’m absolutely delighted that the River Cottage Canteen, Winchester, has been named as one of Open Table’s 100 Best Restaurants of the year. It’s a fantastic accolade – all the more so because the awards are based on reviews from diners ‘on the ground’.

"The wonderful produce of the surrounding area gives us a great head start in creating delicious food for our guests. And it’s incredibly rewarding to know that the service and atmosphere - the entire Canteen experience, in fact - have won such approval.”

The canteen is located in the converted Abbey Mill just off the Broadway in the city centre.
