YOUNG Hampshire stars have been awarded for their outstanding achievement in this year’s Michael Austin Harlick Awards.

Now in its 25th year the awards, run in conjunction with the Hampshire Schools Sports Federation and Hampshire County Council, saw children from across the county praised for their success.

The Winchester ceremony saw Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Kelly Slimm, present winners with their trophies for various accolades in sport.

The Hampshire London 2012 Legacy Award, which recognises the voluntary work of a student who has made a significant contribution for the benefit of others in physical education, was presented to Sasha Bryan, from Peter Symonds College in Winchester.

Ms Simm was also given the Michael May Cup for the most outstanding single performance of the year following her gold medal-winning performance in artistic gymnastics at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The President’s Trophy, for the outstanding team performance of the season, went to Itchen College Ladies U19 Football team for winning the English Colleges National Cup.

Councillor Peter Edgar, Hampshire County Council’s executive member for education, said: “My congratulations go to all of this year’s winners for their fantastic achievements. The County Council is determined to develop quality sporting opportunities in all of its schools, and it is wonderful to see so many young people involved in such a range of sports.

“These awards showcase the wealth of young sports talent here in Hampshire, and it is testament to the hard work of the young people, their coaches and their supporters that so many of them are aspiring for success and competing at high levels.”
