PLANS to help people get to Winchester Railway Station more easily on foot, by bicycle or bus have been agreed by Hampshire County Council.

The idea is to ease congestion with the station becoming more popular with commuters who mainly arrive by car.

Cllr Seán Woodward, executive member for economy, transport and environment, formally adopted the plan at his recent decision day.

Surveys were distributed to approximately 800 passengers at Winchester station and an online survey helped inform the plans. Local councillors, South West Trains, Network Rail and local bus operator, Stagecoach have all contributed to the final Station Travel Plan.

Cllr Woodward said: “This station travel plan will contribute to improving and expanding the travel choices for people getting to the station by helping to ensure practical measures are delivered.

“Many people are beginning to consider the advantages of walking, cycling or using the bus, and the different health, money saving and time saving benefits these can bring. ‘My Journey’ is all about making it easier for people to work out whether their local journey in their own car could be made as conveniently by bus, bike or by car sharing instead. The Winchester Station Travel Plan will help to support this work, offering residents a travel option they may not have considered before.”
