SCOUTS and their families are getting ready for the final nail in their newly extended hut.

The 1st Winchester Scouts are pulling together for two ‘DIY SOS’ style weekends to finish refurbishments that have been five years in the making at their hut in Fleming Road, Weeke.

It will have a new roof with outer skin to stop it from leaking, extended by about 20ft and redesigned internally.

On Saturday and Sunday, and September 27-28, parents, leaders and children will paint, clear, tile, build cupboards and fit the kitchen in the final leg of the £200,000 project.

Dave Kesby, chairman of the unit, said: “We are calling it the final push and we are hoping to have huge crowds of people on both weekends – there’s a lot still to be done! We have had lots of support from parents throughout the fundraising and we are looking forward to two fun-filled weekends.”

The hut is due to be formally opened in January 2015 but will be used by the Scout groups from October onwards.
