SCHOOL children in Twyford have been working hard to perfect their harmonies to record a CD commemorating World War One.

Pre-preps, juniors, seniors and members of the adult chamber choir gathered on Friday (March 14) to sing their renditions of some wartime classics to create a disc in time for a remembrance event to be hosted in September.

The disc includes Jerusalem, Pack up your troubles and Oh it’s a love war as well as a song written specially for the school, O God our help in ages past, by Julian Bond in 2009.

Director of music, David Hall, said: “The children worked hard and enjoyed the whole experience. They managed to record each and every song near-flawlessly despite being interrupted by the occasional aeroplane, a joyful wood pigeon and, at one point, the rather intrusive sound of a chainsaw gang.

“It is not often that children are asked to focus on the one activity for a two-hour stint, but they showed remarkable good humour and self-discipline. The finished disc will be something they will treasure forever and will give them immense pride and satisfaction.

“If we can sell enough copies it will also make some money for the charity Walking With The Wounded.”

Some of the children spent nearly three hours at the end of last week preparing for the recording. The release date has been set for September 6 with a launch concert at St Mary’s Church on October 3.

Pupil Jess Adlington said: “I really enjoyed it! I can't wait to hear it on the CD - all our hard work will be worth it.”
