WINCHESTER Churches Nightshelter is hosting an event to help rebuild the lives of homeless people.

The event, which marks Poverty and Homelessness Action Week, will see guest speakers talk on the theme of ‘Trust Matters: Working to Rebuild Shattered Lives’.

Speakers include Vic Laws, Restaurant Ambassador for The Clink Restaurant at HMP High Down, who trained prisoners in the hospitality industry through the charity, which helps offenders find paid employment upon their release.

He will share his experiences, and will also discuss the role of employment in rebuilding trust and confidence for the homeless.

Paul Montgomery, Nightshelter chairman, said: “We felt that this theme was an important one to explore; how important is it to be trusted to make us feel valued? How important is it to have a job, an identity in employment?

“These are vital questions for anyone dealing with issues relating to homelessness.”

Winchester Cathedral and the University of Winchester will also contribute to the talks – both have worked with the Nightshelter to provide work placement schemes for the homeless.

The event at the Winchester Discovery Centre starts at 7.30pm on January 29, and is free of charge.
